StarGlass, Starlight, and Stellar Achievements (Online)
Date & Time
Tuesday, July 15, 2025, 12:00 PM - 12:50 PM
Description
Learn about the scientific achievements of 18th and 19th century American women astronomers, including Williamina P.S. Fleming and Annie Jump Cannon, who studied the skies via telescope images captured on glass plates and whose stories are often untold. Today, thanks to innovative technologies, your students can continue their legacy through the Smithsonian DataLabs. These 21st century digital data platforms engage high schoolers in making sense of the same types of astronomical data investigated by these women “computers.” A teacher who helped develop accompanying interdisciplinary education resources will share strategies for using them to enhance learning and build students’ STEM identities.
