Carrie Kotcho is the A. James Clark, Assistant Director for Education and Experience at the National Museum of American History (NMAH). She currently, directs the work of teams responsible for interpretive planning, experience design, audience development, instructional design, preK-12 resources, and civic engagement.
Carrie joined NMAH in 2007 as the first Educational Technologist at the Smithsonian. She developed a meta tagging system for its PK12 resources, mapped them to standards of learning, and managed the design and development of Smithsonian’s History Explorer, the museum’s first online portal for digital learning materials.
Carrie currently co-chairs the Smithsonian’s Education Technology strategic initiative and Educating for American Democracy Community Learning Partners, a national network of museums integrating civic learning into their history, arts, and science outreach.
Prior to joining the NMAH staff in 2007, Carrie had a successful consulting career designing and developing digital learning resources for adults and students. She began her career producing children’s television programs and went on to create educational video and interactive experiences for a wide range of corporate, non-profit, and museum audiences.
Carrie earned a Master of Arts in Teaching from the George Washington University where she later served as an adjunct professor in the Graduate School of Education and Human Development. She holds a Bachelor of Science Degree in Telecommunications (Electronic Media) as well as certificates in Instructional Design and Multimedia Development and is a 2012 graduate of the Getty Leadership Institute’s Museum Leaders: The Next Generation Program.
