Dr. Alejandro Diasgranados is an award-winning educator and school leader committed to expanding access to high-quality, experiential learning for all students. He currently serves as an elementary educator at Whitlock Elementary School in Washington, D.C., where he works to ensure that curriculum is both rigorous and deeply connected to the lived experiences of his students. Alejandro is passionate about bridging schools and communities, forging meaningful partnerships with local organizations to provide students with real-world learning opportunities and essential resources.
His journey in education began as a substitute teacher in Massachusetts, where he was inspired by the resilience and brilliance of the students he served. Since then, he has dedicated his career to creating equitable, inclusive, and opportunity-rich environments for historically underserved communities.
Since 2015, Alejandro has taught at Whitlock Elementary School, where his leadership has extended beyond the classroom. He has helped secure transformative resources for his school, including a grant from the Washington Commanders to create a school-based laundry center, a coat drive in partnership with the Washington Capitals, and 265 laptops through national advocacy during the COVID-19 pandemic. He has also advised national education leaders, including U.S. Secretary of Education Dr. Miguel Cardona and Deputy Secretary Cindy Marten, on strategies for advancing equity in public education.
Alejandro’s impact has been recognized nationally: he was named the 2021 D.C. Teacher of the Year and the National University Teacher of the Year, and was featured on The Today Show and in People Magazine’s People of the Year. He holds a B.S. in Health Science from Virginia State University, an M.S. in Education and a Graduate Certificate in School Administration and Supervision from Johns Hopkins University, and a Doctorate in Education from National University.
