Speaker Bio
Ashley Lockwood, the 2023 Delaware Teacher of the Year, never envisioned a teaching career when she graduated from the University of Delaware in 2010 with a degree in sociology. However, an unexpected turn of events led her to become a fifth-grade reading and social studies teacher in the Spanish immersion program at LuLu Ross Elementary School in Milford, Delaware.

Lockwood's journey began during the recession when her mother suggested she try substitute teaching. She quickly fell in love with the classroom environment and pursued a master’s degree in elementary education from Wilmington University. Over the past 12 years, she has gained diverse experience as a substitute teacher, paraprofessional, special education teacher, and immersion program teacher.

Her dedication to building strong relationships with students and their families has been a cornerstone of her success. Lockwood's unique educational journey has helped her create a safe and supportive classroom environment.

Lockwood is committed to educating every student, regardless of their background. She is passionate about educational equity, supporting multilingual students, and closing the gap for underserved populations. She serves on the state teachers’ union’s Ethnic Minority Affairs and Milford’s Equity Action Committee. Ashley believes that teachers have a responsibility to advocate for their students, especially those who may not have strong parental support.
