Shanita Brackett currently serves as the Acting Director of the Smithsonian’s National Museum of African American History and Culture, where she leads the museum’s mission to deliver transformative visitor experiences. Since joining the institution in 2016, she has been instrumental in guiding strategic growth and operational excellence.
Previously, she served as managing direction for museum operations, overseeing finance, human resources, IT, and emergency preparedness—most notably during the COVID-19 pandemic. Brackett has also held leadership roles at the Anacostia Community Museum and as Assistant Director for Visitor and Guest Services at NMAAHC.
A recognized voice in museum innovation, she co-authored a publication on emerging technologies in cultural spaces and serves as a judge for both the Webby and Anthem Awards. With nearly two decades of public service and academic credentials in chemical engineering and information technology from the University of Virginia, Shanita is committed to advancing museums as dynamic platforms for lifelong learning and public engagement.
