Name
Stories That Hold Us Together: Cultivating Civic Action Through Art and Storytelling (Online)
Date
Tuesday, July 14, 2026
Time
1:00 PM - 1:50 PM (EDT)
Description

In moments of division, storytelling becomes a civic act. This session invites educators into a dynamic exploration of how the arts—anchored in Smithsonian collections and stories—can cultivate civic voice, dialogue, and belonging in classrooms and communities. Participants will experience how storytelling practices rooted in visual art, material culture, and lived experience create spaces where students not only learn about democracy—but actively practice it. Drawing from various learning experiences, this session demonstrates how reflection, perspective-taking, and creative expression can transform civic learning into something felt, lived, and shared. Together, we will examine how stories become essential threads in our collective pursuit of a more perfect union.
